Japanese Class Synopsis - 2025-11-06
This week, we covered the following topics:
- Expressing Hope: We learned how to say "I hope" for ourselves and for others using Synthesized-Japanese-Class-Notes#Expressing Hope (〜といいですね / 〜といいんですが).
- Expressing "When": We covered the usage of Synthesized-Japanese-Class-Notes#Expressing "When" (〜とき) to talk about when things happens.
- Potential Verbs: A detailed look at how to form and use Synthesized-Japanese-Class-Notes#Potential Verbs to express ability.

すみませんでした -> Sorry/Excuse me
Used after a negative tense verb to show that we are sorry we are unable to do something.
Verb in て form + ,すみませんでした Note: be sure to conjugate the verb into negative if the verb needs to be negative. See example. パーティーへ行かなくて、すみませんでした I wasn't able to make it to the party, I'm sorry (Past tense)
Examples
- 本をなくして、すみませんでした - I lost the book, I'm sorry
- デートに遅刻して、すみませんでした Note: If its your girlfriend, this is probably a bit formal. Not that we'd known.
- 宿題を持って来なくて、すみませんでした
- 今日、教科書を持って来なくて、すみませんでした
- カメラを壊して、すみませんでした
